Therapeutic Contributions to Personal Change

Life is as unpredictable as it gets, which means that we are impacted by frequent changes (career / relationship/ jobs/ children/ loss of loved ones and etc). When we think we can get comfortable, life surprises us once again with a new “unknown”. So, how do you prepare for these evolving factors? Simply put, one cannot be fully prepared for the future. We simply don’t posses that kind of control. Still, we do posses really important information from our past experiences (successful or not). On that note, I find appropriate to refer to what D. Lama states:

"We must draw lessons from the experiences we gained. If we look back

at the last century, the most devastating cause of human suffering has

been the culture of violence in resolving differences and conflicts.

The challenge before us, therefore, is to make this new 21st century a

century of dialogue when conflicts are resolved non-violently."

                                                            (Lama, 1997)

Periods of change, in one’s life, bring them opportunities to look deep inside themselves, reflect on their actions, and rethink the possibilities of the future. In other words, it represents a gateway to self-acknowledgement, and the key to it is symbolized by one’s personal journey to achieve that moment in their existence. It surely is a continuous process, as people progress to different stages in their lives and different challenges and goals.

In psychotherapy, the clinician will facilitate the process of inner communication and exploration. Therapy is a safe place from judgment, and grounded by practice of compassion and support. It is a team effort identifying and understanding the motivations to change brought up in session, while investigating together possibilities of achieving the aspired improvement. The team effort is key to the process, as it reinforces that one is not alone in that intense and gratifying journey.

I don’t regret the painful times; I bare my scars as if they were medals.  -- Paulo Coelho
